When you are home and your kitchen sink won’t drain or your toilet won’t flush, you know it is not going to be an easy day. So why are these clogs in your house happening and how can you help prevent them? Equal Rooter Pipe Lining wants to help you learn the common causes of sewer clogs to help you avoid them.
Tree Roots in Sewer Line
This is one that you wouldn’t really think would be a sewer problem, but it definitely can end up being a big problem. When you have a tree that has roots that are near the sewer line the roots will be drawn to a water source. In this case, that source is the sewer line. If the roots find a crack in the sewer line those roots will make its way through the crack and start to grow inside the line. When those roots grow big enough inside the line that is when you start having major problems with a clogged sewer line.
Collapsed or Sagging Sewer Line
When the ground soil shifts so can the sewer line. If this happens this can cause a problem when waste tries to and flow through the sewer line. If there is a sag in the line the toilet paper and waste can get clogged not being able to get through the sag, and then backing up the sewer line. You can also have problems if there is a broken pipe. When a pipe is broken the rocks, dirt, and leaves can get into the line where it is broken causing a very serious blockage.
Flushing Wrong Items Down the Toilet
If you are flushing feminine hygiene products, flushable wipes, makeup wipes, paper towels, cotton balls, etc. you should stop. While these products can fit down the toilet, they could get stuck further down the sewer line causing a clog in your sewer line. The only thing that should be going down the toilet is waste and toilet paper.
Putting Wrong Items in the Garbage Disposal
Having a disposal is such a nice thing to have, but just because you have it does not mean you can put everything down there. One time might not be a problem but if you continue to put these things down it, it will eventually start to clog the sewer time. Some of these items are grease, oil, and fat. Too much coffee grounds, egg shells, oatmeal or pasta, and rice. Meat bones, fruit pits, onion skins, banana peels, corn husk, and potato peels all should just be thrown away. And of course, never put trash down the disposal. That is not what it is for.
